The dress shirt is a key item in a man’s wardrobe. Currently, there are thousands of channels men can buydress shirts from – online stores, local shops, malls, supermarkets or even farmer’s markets. Retail stores offer a variety of dress shirt options ranging from $40 to $200 depending on the brand. Recent trends suggest, however, that custom tailored dress shirts provide a better solution – not only would a customer get a good fitting shirt, he can also choose the style and fabric he wants to be used for his shirt. What is a perfect dress shirt?
Here’s a list of shirt basics that you need to know to determine if your shirt has good quality.
1. Perfect Fit – The shirt should fit comfortably around the chest even if the wearer moves his arms around and up and down. The neck section of the shirt should be big enough to allow two fingers between the neck and shirt collar when the shirt is buttoned. The seams of the back of the shirt should be aligned to the edge of the shoulders down to the curve of your deltoids. The waist section of the shirt should be snug and fit comfortably even if the wearer is seated. The sleeves should be long enough to reach about half an inch before the lowest joint on your thumb. The tails (back) of the shirt should be long enough so that it will not rise when you are seated.
2. The thread count – higher thread count usually indicates good quality. A thread count of 80s to 120s is recommended. Too high thread counts may be costly and impractical as special laundry care is needed.
3. Buttons – mother of pearl buttons provide a more pristine, neat and classy look compared to plastic buttons.
