Tips on Getting Perfectly Fitted Dress Shirts | ||||
Dress shirts, with its humble beginnings, have definitely become a staple in the closet of a modern man. Suitable for both casual and formal functions, dress shirts are probably the most common type of clothing men wear. That is why it is very important to have a perfectly fitted dress shirt for every occasion. It doesn't really matter if you have an expensive or branded one, as long as it fits perfectly and comfortably, a dress shirt is definitely the way to go. Everyone can look good on a perfectly fitted dress shirt. But how exactly can an average Joe know if his dress shirt is fitting perfectly? Are there any ways to find out if it's too small or too big? Are there hints that can tell a guy whether he looks good or not on a dress shirt he just bought? Well, there are. To avoid any more mishap when wearing a dress shirt, here are some helpful tips to remember: 1. Collar. The flap of fabric around your neck when wearing dress shirt, though it look very simple, needs the utmost attention. Because it is one of the most exposed part of the dress shirt, not to mention it's just under your face and will never go unnoticed, it is important to pay close attention to it. Many men are not aware that collars also have sizes proportional to the neck size. The perfect fitted collar should have at least about half an inch more than the neck size. This is to avoid being choked by your own clothes. The general rule for dress shirt collars is that you need to be able to slip in two fingers in the space between the neck and the collar. More than two fingers mean that it's too big, while less means you'll probably have a hard time breathing. You can find out your neck size by simply wearing a measuring tape around your neck and add about half an inch to the number you get. When buying a dress shirt, don't be afraid in trying the things you like. Lastly, you should also make sure to leave an allowance of a couple of inches when buying a dress shirt to compensate for when the fabric start shrinking after several washings. 2. Torso. The fit of a dress shirt on the torso depends mostly on the type of cut done for the dress shirt. Though the general rule is that there should still be at least an inch of breathing room inside the shirt when it is full-buttoned, personal preference and taste will still matter. For those men who wants to emphasize their body shape, European cut which is more petite is the way to go. American cut, on the other hand, is more loose and baggy, which is the way to go for people who have little tummies because they are more comfortable. 3. Sleeves. The last and probably most important part of the dress shirt are the sleeves and its length. Typically, there's more than one sleeve length proportional to a collar size. But because men have different arm length and body proportion, it is somehow tricky to find a perfectly fitting dress shirt as far as the sleeves are concerned. But of course, there are ways to know if sleeves are too short or too long. First, the end of the sleeves, no matter if it's standard cuffs or French cuffs, should reach the wrist as the arms are hanging down. It's generally considered short if more than half inch of the sleeve is pulled back when you swing your arms horizontally. The perfectly fitted cuffs should not let the hands slip through. Of course, there are still many parts that you need to put in mind when buying that perfectly fitted dress shirt. But the three above are the most important ones that you should never ever forget about. Once you get these parts right, it will definitely be an easy hunt for that perfect fitting dress shirt for you. |
