Traveling can be a little tiresome and boring waiting at airports for boarding. So I tend to look at fashion statements of men on the go, some ridiculous, some impressive. What to wear: Layers Basic Tshirt - You'd want to be able to strip down to the last tshirt just in case your arriving at a tropical destination
Button Down dress shirt - You can button up your shirt when you get a feel bit of chill or you see a potential business partner flying next to you. Or you can button the shirt down and expose your undershirt and still appear fashionable but more relaxed. See Modern Tailor smart dress shirt options: These are non-iron, non-wrinkle fabrics. 
Jumper - Some planes can be cold, some stop overs can have 4 seasons within 1 hour. You'd want to be flexible. You can use cotton, merino or cashmere, light weight to medium weight jumpers.  Smart Jacket - You want to look sharp but remain comfortable and warm
Dark Colours - I would think it makes sense to use darker colours but it's ok to use light or pastel colours for tshirts or inners. Darker colours are great to look sharp, focused and free from stains and spills. Cotton Pants - When you spend 4 to 18 hours on the plane, stretch! You need your blood circulating. Comfortable shoes - This is debatable. I wouldn't recommend leather shoes unless you have comfortable ones. Brands like Rockport, Swatch and Merrell are great options - they have smart casual designs. Use something not too sporty but not to businessy.  Back pack - Better to use two shoulders to prevent back or shoulder pains. You can carry up to 8 kg on the cabin so try to balance the weight.  Hat - This is useful. ALL budget airlines don't give you eye covers and it's so difficult to sleep without them, especially if you have an anxious seat mate who reads, watches movies or eats while you're sleeping. Hats are also protective gear just in case it's raining when you arrive in London or if it's incredibly hot and glary in Australia. Sun Glasses - Not only can it increase your sex appeal but it can protect your eyes.  What not to wear: Belt - You may not have enough time to reach your connecting flight so try not to deal with customs too much by having to take off your belt during xray screening time. Jewelry/Accessories - Not only can you lose them while moving around or jumping from one plane to plane, they are bothersome when you have to remove rings and bracelet while using toilets. Not to mention you'd be a target for theft if in case you're planning to have a holiday in a 3rd world tropical island.
